The District of Thrace is located in the northern-most part of Greece. It comprises the following Prefectures: Evros (including the island of Samothraki), Rodopi and Xanthi. It is separated in Western and Eastern Thrace. The Eastern Thrace belongs to Turkey and it constitutes the European part of this country, while the western Thrace belongs to Greece. Its borders are to the North with Bulgaria, to the East with Turkey and to the West with the Prefecture of Macedonia, while to the south it is wetted by the Thrakiko Pelagos. Thrace's natura border of the river Evros is separating it (and the rest of Greece) from Turkey. The territory of Thrace is 50% mountainous and 50% flat. The coasts are smooth and low and they have beautiful beaches but they do not shape appreciable harbours. Alexandroupoli is the only harbor worth mentioning. Its climate by the shores is Mediterranean, in the interior, however, becomes continental. The winter is very heavy and is considered one of the coldest in Greece. Thrace has a lot of tourist regions and many vacation areas. |
